If you are visiting Sydney for a holiday, or looking to enjoy a day out in our beautiful city, and need an accessible bathroom equipped with a hoist and adult-size change table, we’ve got a list for you to bookmark. I’m pleased to say that over the last five years, the City of Sydney and many of our major attractions have improved access for people needing these facilities with eight accessible Sydney toilets now available with a hoist and adult-sized change table.
1. Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is one of the country’s most recognised attractions. Whether you are visiting the Sydney Opera House to see a show or taking part in one of their accessible behind-the-scenes tours, you can be assured of having the facilities you need with a Changing Places bathroom available.
2. Art Gallery of NSW
Braeden is a regular visitor at the Art Gallery of NSW. With ever-changing exhibitions there is always something new to check out. When he and his support worker visited recently I asked them to go and check out the Changing Places Bathroom. The bathroom is located on the lower level 2. A MLAK key is needed but if you don’t have your own you can borrow one from the information desk on the ground floor or call 02 9225 1744
3. Australian Museum
The Australian Museum may have a wonderful display of dinosaurs but the museum offers modern facilities including a Changing Places bathroom facility. It’s wonderful to know that visitors to the museum, who need a hoisted bathroom facility, or an adult-sized change table, now have the ability to access these facilities without leaving the museum. It’s also available to anyone visiting the city who needs to pop in and use the facilities.
Visitors either need a MLAK key or need to locate a staff member to open the bathroom.
The Australian Museum is located at 1 William Street, Sydney.
4. Parliament House
A Changing Places facility is located in NSW Parliament House. While it is open to the general public, be aware that security needs to be cleared before entering so it’s a bit of a time consuming process. Let’s just say, you wouldn’t want to be in a hurry. It can be accessed Monday to Friday, during opening hours 9am to 5pm.
It’s located at Parliament of New South Wales, 6 Macquarie Street, Sydney on level 6, next to the Education Centre, access via lift adjacent to front reception. Access to level 6 via the ramp at front of Macquarie Street forecourt. Ask security or parliamentary staff for assistance.
A MLAK key is not needed to access the bathroom.
5. Westfield – Sydney
For anyone shopping or sightseeing in the heart of the city the Westfield bathroom is handy and is equipped with an adult change table and hoist which is remote controlled and height adjustable. It has an adjustable neck support and has a weight capacity of 200kgs.
The accessible bathroom facility is located on level 2 of Westfield Sydney. You can enter the Westfield Sydney from Pitt Street Mall or Westfield Sydney Valet from 135 King Street.
6. Harry Jensen Centre, Millers Point (The Rocks)
In The Rocks area of the city you can find a Changing Places bathroom located at the Harry Jensen Centre, Millers Point. Head through the gates to the right of the Abraham Mott Hall which is adjacent to the Children’s playground
During the opening hours of the Harry Jensen Centre (9.30am to 4.30pm) the bathroom can be used. Staff can facilitate access. The Harry Jensen Centre is located 15A Argyle St, Millers Point
A MLAK key is not required.
7. ICC – Darling Harbour
This is the most convenient hoisted facility with adult-size change table in the Darling Harbour area. The adult=size change table and hoist is remote controlled and height adjustable. The bathroom is huge with grab rails throughout, a back-rest on the toilet and lever taps.
Location International Convention Centre Building, Level 2 14 Darling Drive, Sydney (This bathroom is located at the end of the building closest to the Chinese Friendship Garden)
8. Crown Towers Hotel Sydney – Barangaroo
I was recently attending a function at the Crown Hotel in Barangaroo and while taking the stairs on my way out I spotted a Changing Places bathroom. It was MLAK key locked and I was without a key so I couldn’t have a look inside but judging by the signage it offers a hoist and adult-size change table.
The Crown Towers Sydney Hotel is located at International Tower, Level 2, 1 Barangaroo Ave, Barangaroo
While that’s our list of accessible bathrooms in the heart of the city equipped with a hoist and adult-size change table, there is also a MLAK key locked bathroom at Taronga Zoo and at Sydney International Airport if you should visit either.
If you are looking for an accessible unisex bathroom we also have a list of honorable mentions in this post.
