We are big fans of the Sydney Royal Easter Show and as a child I attended every year. It was a tradition I was more than happy for my parents to continue. Braeden also likes the idea of an annual visit and this year will be no exception. We are looking forward to visiting on opening day so we can share all the news of the show when it’s hot off the press. I’ve previously written extensively about the accessibility at the show and our family’s tips in a blog but in preparation I’ve been in touch with the organisers. While chatting with them via email I mentioned that many people and families in our Have Wheelchair Will Travel community find it difficult to visit the Easter Show for the day without a Changing Places style of bathroom being available. I received really positive news in return so I thought I’d share that and other news on the disability facilities available at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in a quick blog.
Changing Places bathroom at the Sydney Royal Easter Show
There is a mobile bathroom located on GIANTS Concourse, which is compliant to Changing Places national standards. The unit has a flat floor system with a ramp, end & side door access options. As well as a compliant powered para mobility adjustable height change table, which can be lowered completely to the floor. The unit also features an adjustable handrail and air conditioning. The location on GIANTS Concourse is in a low traffic area and located a short distance from the St Johns Ambulance main set up should assistance be needed. There is no hoist in the bathroom.
You will not need a MLAK key to access the bathroom. A staff member will be monitoring the bathroom to ensure it is not being taken advantage of and available to those who really need the facilities.
The mobile Changing Places style of bathroom is not be advertised in the Show Guide as the organisers of the Sydney Royal Easter Show want to ensure this facility is available to those who need it. If you’ve booked a person with a disability ticket you may have already been advised of this information. An email is being sent to anyone who has booked this ticket.
TIP – I’ll also add that you really need two people to access this bathroom as the bathroom door swings out quickly when you press the green button the on the side. Please stand back so it doesn’t swing into your wheelchair.
Quite room for people with sensory needs
A Quiet Room is available at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and is equipped with sensory items, pillows, and headphones that individuals can use to self-regulate. It is located to the right of the Dome.
Hidden Disabilities
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is collaborating with Hidden Disabilities and distributing sunflower lanyards to people with both hidden and physical disabilities. These lanyards are available from the Information Booth at the show.
Last year we visited the Sydney Royal Easter Show after being absent for a couple of years and had an absolutely wonderful day. It’s always lovely to revisit old favourites like the arts and crafts, the Country Women’s Association’s devonshire tea room and of course it’s all about making new memories each year. Make sure you read our general Sydney Royal Easter Show access tips in our guide.
So thrilled for all the people that the new accessibility features will assist in having a great day at the show. We’d love to hear about your visit if you are going.
So basically change room facilities are by 1st responders section by the livestock area’s?
No where near showbags the more busy sections of the grounds?
Hi Jenny,
The area was chosen because it is quieter. The area near the show bags can be an absolute nightmare to navigate around at certain times of the day. I don’t know the exact reason but I do know that it was purposefully chosen to be a quieter area.
