Braeden anticipates and celebrates his birthday with such joy every year which makes me keen to keep the birthday surprises coming. So, this year, I had an idea to have a Mario Bros themed birthday celebration to embrace Braeden’s current love of the Mario Bros. Ideally I’d have taken him to Tokyo to dress up in outfits and race around the streets in Mario Bros karts but that wasn’t possible so this was the next best thing.

Hubby was a little shocked when I announced he would be dressing up as Luigi for the day but soon got into the spirit. We did have a bit of a hiccup when his Luigi outfit arrived and although the onesie fitted well it was a little too snug around Luigi’s “toolbox” making it not so PG. That’s how we ended up with two Luigi’s as I ordered him another outfit and I decided to get in on the action. When Braeden came home to find the two of us dressed up and his Mario outfit waiting he was beyond delighted. I am sure the neighbours wondered what the heck was going on. Seeing his joy made my day.
Amelia had some great ideas to embrace the Mario Bros celebration theme. We put Braeden’s gifts in the yellow boxes and wrapped them in the yellow tissue paper with the question marks on them. He needed to punch (like Mario) the yellow boxes to get to his presents. We also had the red box with paper cups covered with yellow tissue paper stuck in the box. Each cup contained a number that matched a gift bag containing a present.
I couldn’t get Mario Bros wrapping paper in Australia so I bought gift bags and put Mario Bros stickers on the bag to keep with the theming.
It really added an element to fun to the present giving and was more interactive than just giving Braeden a wrapped present.
I am glad Braeden’s birthday is in August because I must say the polyester outfits were a little steamy but definitely added so much to the day. Amelia chose a Yoshi t-shirt to have a touch of Mario Bros but not quite so over the top as the rest of us.
Mario (AKA Braeden) loved setting off the bombs that were dotted around the lounge area. Just black balloons with white circles on them.
Amelia spent quite a bit of time decorating a Mario Bros themed cake which Braeden loved. It is two round cakes put together and decorated with icing, crushed Oreos, Smarties (like M&Ms) and various Mario Bros characters.
We always like to involve Braeden in everything so had him cut the cake which didn’t quite go to plan.
Excuse the blurry photo but not even my phone could fathom what was happening as the tray table slipped off the table as Hubby and Braeden cut the cake and landed on the floor. All that work Amelia had put into the cake was smashed on the floor.
Lucky the floor was clean and the cake tasted good anyway.
After cake we had some old fashioned fun with pin the moustache on Mario.
We certainly won’t forget this birthday in a hurry. It was so much fun. In fact it was a weekend of birthday fun starting with a visit to Luna Park.
That was followed by a donut tower – always a winner!
We had a family visit to Timezone which was Amelia’s present to Braeden. We all got involved and really enjoyed competing and working together for points.
Amelia chose a super accessible Timezone which made it a breeze for Braeden to access as many of the games as possible.
We also dropped in at the Deaf Festival for a sausage sizzle and that’s where Braeden was reunited with his new friend, Emma Watkins (ex yellow Wiggle and now Emma Mema).
I’m not sure who was more delighted. Braeden recently met Emma at the Disney Cruise event and when she spotted him at the Deaf Festival she came over to say hello and suggested a photo. Emma is truly the loveliest person and such a calm soul. Unlike our Mr over the top!
So, as you can see, Braeden has every reason to love his birthday. It was filled with time with family including his Gran and Grandad and lots of lovely gifts. I wonder what I can come up with for next year’s birthday? I can hear Hubby groaning already!!!
