When you visit a tropical destination, most people dream of a swim in a pool or the ocean. In Cairns, locals and visitors alike flock to the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon.
With crocodiles also enjoying some of the local waterways, it’s good to know there is somewhere safe to have a swim. There’s even a lifeguard on duty at the Lagoon to keep an eye on swimmers.
We’ve visited Cairns on many occasions and in our opinion, a visit isn’t complete until you’ve taken a dip here. And the best bit, it offers visitors with a disability good access too. Here’s what you need to know.

Cairns Esplanade Lagoon accessibility review
Many hotels, restaurants and shops are in close to proximity to the Cairns Esplanade and Lagoon making it a hive of activity. The level walkway is popular with those seeking to take a stroll/wheel in the morning and the late afternoon when the heat is less intense. For visitors looking to have a picnic with a view, there is shade under the trees, barbecues and Muddy’s Playground for any accompanying children. There are also some accessible elements in the play space.

Although much of the level pathway is boardwalk (which can be bone jolting for a wheelchair user) there is an asphalt path that runs parallel to the mudflats which provides a smooth ride.

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is the centrepiece of this area with an expansive lagoon for swimming and varying depths to suit all abilities. Access is also free, and who doesn’t like a free activity when travelling.

A pool wheelchair can be loaned for free by visiting the lifeguard on duty.

For visitors that need a spacious bathroom with hoist and adult-size change bed, there is a Changing Places bathroom available beside the lagoon. Access to the bathroom is available by using a MLAK key. If you don’t have your own MLAK, or your forget it in your hotel room, the lifeguard on duty can provide access.
