Changing Places Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

We’ve visited Cairns in Tropical North Queensland many times and particularly love swimming in the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. It’s a safe place to swim (no crocodiles), it’s centrally located, and offers various water depths so it’s suitable for all ages and abilities.

Since our visit as a family there has been an addition of a Changing Places bathroom facility making  the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and surrounding picnic areas even more accessible.

Right beside the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon you’ll find a block of bathroom facilities, including a Changing Places bathroom.

It’s the ideal location for a Changing Places bathroom with the waterfront area being popular for swimming, exercising and having a picnic.

A MLAK Key is required to access the bathroom. If you don’t have your own, speak to the lifesavers to gain access.

The bathroom offers an adult-size change bed, hoist on a ceiling track, grab rails throughout and shower with shower bench.

Lever taps, an accessible wash basin and a privacy screen are also available. It’s good to see multiple large sanitary bins provided for continence product disposal.

Rails on either side of the toilet can be lifted out of the way for transferring and their is a height-adjustable shower wand. Unfortunately, it was left at full height which is never helpful.

We are always impressed when there is signage alerting visitors to other accessible facilities in the area, so I was pleased to note a sign in the bathroom highlighting the availability of an aquatic wheelchair and information on how to access it.

Walking or wheeling along the Cairns Esplanade is a wonderful way to start any day so we are really happy to see the provision of the Changing Places Cairns Esplanade Lagoon.
