Being regular visitors to the Blue Mountains area we have a few favourite cafes and restaurants which we return to regularly. These places have reasonably priced, tasty food and are wheelchair accessible.
CONSERVATION HUT – WENTWORTH FALLS
This little place is hidden away in Wentworth Falls but has beautiful views and delicious food. I particularly like breakfast here but I’ve been here for dinner in summer and it was great. They have wheelchair access to both inside, on the upper level and outside on the verandah. I like sitting outside here to really take in the views and the atmosphere of the bush. Access to the verandah for wheelchairs is to the left of the front door. You need to lift up the chain across the entry. Inside there is a split level in the restaurant and the top level is accessible. There is also a large wheelchair accessible bathroom.
On the weekend parking here is at a premium because you have people leaving their cars in the parking area and doing a long bushwalk plus people for the cafe. There is one wheelchair parking spot but otherwise there is a turning bay where you can drop off passengers and it’s either a matter of waiting out the parking or parking further up on the street.
CARRINGTON HOTEL – KATOOMBA
Don’t let all the stairs put you off! If you head around to the garage (to the right of the hotel as you look at it) you will find a wheelchair accessible entrance. You need to ring the bell and someone will come and open the door for you.
We love the atmosphere of this old hotel in Katoomba. History oozes from it’s walls. There are also old pictures of the hotel in it’s heyday if you have trouble feeling the whole history oozing from the walls!
We usually have something to eat from the bar menu and either sit near the bar, outside on a warmer day or by the fire in the lounge on a cold winter’s day. The kids think they have the best wedges.
Service is usually quick and friendly.
There is also a large disabled toilet facility near the bar.
Parking is available if you are eating at the hotel in the car park. Drive up the driveway and there is parking to the left in an open air car park.
TAKE AWAY – Bakehouse on Wentworth Leura
This bakery does have a step but I can’t help mentioning it because they have the best pies and they are great for a picnic lunch. I usually just run into this shop and get what we need to take on a picnic. It isn’t wheelchair accessible but if there is someone that can go in to get the pies they are delicous. They are more expensive than your usual aussie meat pie but they actually have real meat inside! We like the beef, lamb and pumpkin and feta pies. I love their croissants, sour dough bread, meditteranean fruit loaf and they have some scrumptious desserts, cakes and pastries. They have several outlets in the moutains so maybe check out their website for the one closest to where you will be!
