If you are lucky enough to be visiting San Diego in early Spring (this year the season is March 1 – May 13) don’t leave without seeing the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. There are nearly 20 hectares of Tecolote Ranunculus flowers covering the hillside. Even if you don’t know what a Ranunculus is, trust me, a hillside display of rows and rows of colourful flowers is beautiful. The season is short and is an announcement to locals and visitors that spring has arrived in Southern California.
This would be quite a challenge with a manual wheelchair except there are antique tractor rides to get you amongst the flowers. The ride allows you to fully appreciate the vast area the flowers cover. Being high in an open air wagon gives you an elevated view, making for great photo opportunites. I was so impressed with this attraction because it is only open for 6-8 weeks but there is a ramp and platform to allow wheelchair access to the wagon. I know this is how things should be but as we know that isn’t always the case.
The kids enjoyed the tractor ride and there were other activities like gem fossicking to keep them entertained.

We combined this visit with a trip to Legoland but we were rushed.
Will I be able to use my mobility scooter at the gardens?
