Lake Cathie, as I’ve mentioned, holds a special place in my heart. The beach is not particularly accessible but the Lake is great. There is a picnic area that is mostly level that leads down to a short strip of sand and then into the Lake. The Lake varies greatly according to weather and conditions. Sometimes it is open to the ocean and is much deeper than other times. On our last visit it was relatively shallow but perfect for younger kids or anyone that doesn’t like the surf. It is very popular with families and is the perfect place to bring things like inflatable boats, canoes etc.

There are picnic tables, bbqs, playground, disabled parking spots and a disabled toilet facility. If you fancy having a day off cooking there is a take away store just across the road for fish and chips, hamburgers and more. The Lake is really worth the trip out from Port Macquarie. My tip: if you are just driving through Lake Cathie from Port Macquarie heading south to Bonny Hills, turn left after the bridge for a pretty detour around the Lake to the beach. It only takes minutes but I love it.
