It’s been too long between visits to Melbourne so I was thrilled to be invited to the Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Conference (AITCAP). I only had an afternoon to spend in Melbourne CBD so knowing how much I enjoyed the last exhibition at LUME, I decided to head back. I was with my friend Kimberly from New Zealand (Grab Your Wheels Let’s Travel) and we were both intrigued by LUME – Leonardo da Vinci. What an incredibly talented man.
Review – LUME Melbourne – Leonardo da Vinci
THE LUME Melbourne is the Southern Hemisphere’s first permanent digital gallery. While I love traditional galleries, I think digital exhibitions make art accessible to those who may be less engaged by a picture hanging on a wall. Braeden absolutely loves these exhibitions and will stay still and enjoy it on loop – impressive for our on the go guy.
LUME Melbourne is located in the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre which offers excellent accessibility throughout, as does the LUME exhibition. Although the artwork projections are the main event at LUME, the information and history shared about Leonardo da Vinci is fascinating. Leonardo da Vinci certainly was a creative genius who left an incredible legacy.

Interactive boards are located at a good height to engage visitors of all ages.
There really is more to this exhibition than the art which I imagine widens its appeal and justifies the entry price ($49.50 for adults $39.90 for concession) as it isn’t a quick visit. I lost track of time as I lay in a bean bag enjoying the projections but I estimate we spent at least 90 minutes to two hours inside.
Interactive elements at the exhibition seemed to be keeping young and old engaged. Visitors are invited to use Leonardo’s plans to build a bridge or if the mood takes you, sit at an easel and watch a video on how to draw like Leonardo and give it a go yourself. I didn’t fancy my chances at success based on previous art classes so I skipped it. After reading about da Vinci’s life and achievements I felt somewhat unaccomplished.
Plenty of seating is provided in the space, a lift is available if needed to access the upper level of the gallery space and an accessible bathroom is also available. If you fancy a snack or a drink there is a cafe which offers good viewing of the projections.
We visited on a Monday afternoon so the venue was quiet and uncrowded.

I paid for my ticket to ThE LUME – Leonardo da Vinci exhibition. I highly recommend a visit and allow some time to really get to know Leonardo da Vinci – his background is fascinating. Imagine achieving all he did without any formal education! Just goes to show, I might have wasted way too long at school!
