The San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter on the River Walk offers an undercover driveway so taxis and Ubers can deliver guests right to the door. Automatic electric glass doors provide easy access to the reception area of the hotel where low height counters allow wheelchair users to be served by any available member of staff. There’s no waiting around for the one staff member at the lower height counter .  I’m hoping Australia follows the US example by lowering all hotel check in counters as hotels are built or renovated. It makes a good first impression if a guest in a wheelchair can see the person serving them at reception.

Marriott Rivercenter is an expansive hotel with all the facilities you’d expect of a large hotel including a bar, restaurant, conference rooms and business facilities.

On this occasion I was provided with an accessible room with a bath and a bath seat. I was disappointed that I couldn’t review an accessible room with a roll-in shower but I also don’t want to take a room that is needed by someone else when I’m travelling without Braeden. I have no doubt that the Marriot Rivercenter on the River Walk offers exceptional accessible accommodation in all categories of access. I would suggest calling the hotel direct to book and to ensure you receive a roll-in shower if this is what you need.

A spacious accessible room with wooden floors was my home for four nights while I was in San Antonio. Non carpeted floors make moving around in a wheelchair much easier and is something we welcome in an accessible room’s design.

Both sides of the bed offered space for transferring from a wheelchair and there is space under the bed for a hoist to be used if needed.

Bedroom facts – bed height 46cm, clearance under the bed 20cm.

I welcomed the light which would stream into my room from the floor to ceiling window but I’d equally appreciate shutting it out when it was time to sleep with the block out curtain.

A wide entrance way leads guests from the front door to the bathroom and the bedroom. The bathroom is spacious and offers lowered amenities and grab rails throughout.

Lever taps are fitted throughout and the shower offers dual shower heads, one at a lower height for use with the bath seat.

Bathroom facts – bathroom door clearance – 88cn – bath height 36cm – toilet height to seat – 44cm – toilet height to pan 42cm under bathroom sink clearance – 69cm

A wardrobe with an automatic light on opening offers a lowered safe, ironing board, iron and a full length mirror. The hanging rail is not lowered in the wardrobe.

A small bar fridge, coffee machine and tea making facilities are offered at wheelchair height.

Visual alarms are fitted in the room and an interconnecting room is available for guests travelling with family or a support worker.

I had a busy schedule while in San Antonio so I didn’t have time to have a dip in the indoor/outdoor pool but I did take the time to check it out.

As with all US hotels, the pool offers a hoist seat for accessing the pool. It will be a wonderful day when this becomes standard in Australia.

I frequented the Starbucks café and shop in the foyer of the hotel. It offers a good range of the usual Starbucks range but lots of snack food (healthy and unhealthy) to grab on the go. They also sell a small range of souvenirs.

As I mentioned early on, the location of the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter River Walk Hotel is one of the highlights of staying at the hotel. River Center is a medium-sized shopping mall with a range of shops offering everything from Texan cowboy boots to clothing brands such as American Eagle and H&M. Also, within walking distance is the Alamo and other historic sites.

Walking along the River Walk is a treat with it’s trees festooned in fairy lights at night, colourful river boats and restaurants with aromas beckoning you to sit down.
