Last week we headed to Lake Macquarie to do some filming around the completion of the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk. We were invited to give our insights into how we feel the boardwalk will benefit the local community and visitors. We are big fans of the Lake Macquarie area. Located only an hour and a half from Sydney, Lake Macquarie offers a range of accessible accommodation and activities that keep us returning. The Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk is a lovely accessible addition, which offers cracking views of the lake.
Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk – accessible Lake Macquarie
We’ve previously visited Swansea to review the exceptional accessible accommodation at Lake Mac Holiday Park’s Swansea property. We had such a comfortable stay in the water view accessible cabin, and we are thrilled that the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk is right next door. Linking accessible accommodation with accessible attractions is key to providing an overall inclusive experience for visitors. Guests are now able to walk out the gate of the holiday park, wheel or walk down the level concrete pathway along the lake front to the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk.
The boardwalk is 230 metres in length and winds its way through the mangroves. Crossing a bridge we paused to spot the fish in the clear waters and admire the birdlife who call it home. Hubby and I both commented at how refreshed we felt by being on walk with such gorgeous water views. As many of you will know, wheelchair accessible walks with a stunning view are few and far between.
Seeing the variety of people enjoying the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk was a good reminder that accessible facilities are utilised by a wide range of people in the community. Families with prams, a gentleman on his scooter, with his four-legged best pal riding shotgun, and cyclists, all passed us as we wheeled along. A couple of older ladies stopped to chat about how pleased they were to find the boardwalk.
Braeden isn’t a fan, and I don’t blame him, of the wooden boardwalks that jolt your whole body as you clunk over the wooden planks, so we were pleased to find the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk offers such a smooth ride.
There are plenty of spots to picnic around the Lake Macquarie area but we have made some great family memories under the trees at Swansea just near the new boardwalk. The lake provides good swimming for young children and those that like nothing more than a calm spot to float.
Wheelchair accessible seating is available at the picnic tables.
We have a good list of accessible and inclusive activities in Lake Macquarie in this blog.

Filming at the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk
Braeden found filming on location had many distractions. It’s hard to be Mr Social and stay focused when there are so many friendly people around.
Braeden had some questions to answer regarding what he likes about being able to use the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk which he answered using his iPad. Again, he was somewhat distracted but I think it’s wonderful that production companies and the government are welcoming the use of alternative communication in these videos. Being involved is so great for Braeden’s confidence and just adds another dimension to his life’s experiences.
If you live in Sydney or you are heading down the coast through Lake Macquarie, make sure you stop in to check out the Swansea Foreshore Boardwalk.
