Travelling through Sydney Domestic Terminal last week I spied something new that I am sure will be a welcome addition to the terminal – a Changing Places bathroom. I stopped one of the Sydney Airport volunteers to ask her about it and she said she thought it had only been there for a matter of months. I think she was somewhat perplexed at my enthusiasm for the newish facility. I am surprised that it took so long for a facility to be provided but it’s there now and I’m happy to say that Sydney Domestic Airport now has a Changing Places bathroom.
Sydney Domestic Airport Changing Places Bathroom
The Changing Places bathroom is located at the train station end of the Sydney Domestic terminal, opposite baggage carousel number two. I feel somewhat conflicted about its location. It is in a logical area for people arriving into Sydney but it is super busy. The lady’s toilet located beside the Changing Places bathroom had a long queue winding out the door and I saw a mother with a small child in a pram pressing the button to go into the Changing Places bathroom. When she did so it exposed another lady sitting on the toilet in the bathroom. A little embarrassing for all concerned. Changing Places bathrooms are designed to fulfil a specific purpose and neither the lady using the bathroom or the lady with a young child in the pram appeared to need the facility for the reasons it was designed and provided, thus my concern about its location. And yes, I am aware of hidden disabilities but this bathroom is designed for people who need a hoist and adult size change table.
The bathroom is spacious with great circulation room, an adult-size change table, hoist and toilet with hand rails. The location of the toilet paper does seem to require somewhat of a stretch to get to it.
A shower with shower bench seat is also provided.
As you exit the terminal and get to the baggage carousels turn right and head for the signs to the trains and you shouldn’t have any problem finding the Changing Places bathroom. It is not locked.
If you are travelling through Sydney International Airport you can read about the Changing Places bathrooms in this review.
Melbourne Domestic Airport also has a Changing Places bathroom.
If you’re looking for accessible bathrooms in Brisbane, including the Brisbane Airport’s Changing Places bathroom, I’ve shared details in this review.
Sydney Domestic Airport Accessible Pick-up location
Don’t forget, if you are arranging to be picked up from Sydney Domestic Airport there is an accessible pick up point just located outside of the terminal.
The pick-up point is monitored by airport staff and if someone is picking you up they need to display your parking permit on the windscreen.
Vehicles are not permitted to park in this location unless their passenger is waiting so I suggest communicating to arrange timing once you have collected your luggage. There is a bench available for those who can’t stand for long periods of time.
Those bathrooms look ideal and the pick up/drop off areas
Isn’t it great that Disability is being seen in a positive way
