The one thing I knew I wanted in a hotel in San Francisco was for it to be located in a level area of Fisherman’s Wharf. I wanted to be able to walk out the door with the wheelchair and not need to get it, and ourselves, in and out of the car every single day of our 5 night stay.
The Argonaut Hotel ticked this box and allowed for a level walk to dinner, shopping and entertainment.
The Argonaut Hotel (A Kimpton Hotel)
If every hotel was like the Argonaut I’d be a very happy traveller. The Argonaut is a boutique hotel located in a historic warehouse building which oozes charm.
We had a fabulous room (that did come with a very handsome price tag, but for location, comfort and to start us off on our holiday it was well worth it)
Our king room was so spacious with two rooms which included a double pull out sofa in the lounge, tv, dvd, long dining room table and still had room to spare. The bedroom had king bed, tv/dvd and plenty of space with a large roll away for AJ. The bathroom was amazing with the deepest bath I have ever seen (a bit of a problem with our son but we did manage).
The rooms are beautifully decorated and the nautical theme is very tasteful. The appeal and the child friendly nature of the hotel had me warning the kids that this would be the best hotel of the holiday, and it was!
The staff made our stay even better by going out of their way to be hospitable, making it feel more like a guest house than a hotel.
There was a complimentary wine hour each evening in the lounge serving local wines. Very civilized!
The hotel is pet friendly so if you have a problem with dogs greeting you in the lift as they head out with their owners to take a walk maybe this isn’t the hotel for you. We found that the dogs staying in the hotel were very well behaved and no doubt well travelled so didn’t cause us a problem despite our son not being fond of them.
My tip is to join the free Kimpton Intouch loyalty programme. The current benefits are free wifi in your room if you are a member plus a US$10 raid the mini bar voucher (I enjoyed being the popular Mum that said “yes, you can have something from the minibar”, for once!!!
As I’ve mentioned before we look for a room with a bath so we did not stay in an accessible room but head to the website and check out the details if this is what you require.
The Argonaut had the kids “at hello”! A raucous welcome was given by Steve the doorman. The kids were quickly in love with the Argonaut hotel and we had a fantastic stay!
AJ’s Tip
*This is a really fun hotel for kids.
*You can do a scavenger hunt and when you’ve completed it you get a block of Ghiradelli chocolate as a prize! (Yum!)
*The hotel have pet goldfish you can borrow for your stay. I loved having 2 fish to look after. I named them Alex and Harper after my favourite characters in the show, Wizards of Waverly Place.
*The doorman Steve is very funny and gives kids a little present when you arrive.
*We got a raid the mini bar voucher so we could choose something from the mini bar which I really liked!
*Our room was SO luxurious!
Does the hotel arganout does it have wheelchairs to hire?
Abigail, I doubt it but I would suggest you contact them direct for that question. I don’t think many hotels keep wheelchairs but many attractions do. Good luck. Julie
We stayed at the Argonaut in June after reading your review Julie and I must say it was excellent! The staff were helpful and changed the height of our bed as required. The restaurant staff were impeccable and the location is great for exploring the Fishermans Wharf and Embarcadero. Thanks for your blog its wonderful.
Hi Carolyn, Thanks so much for letting us know. The kids still talk about the Argonaut Hotel. It was a really special experience for our whole family. Julie
