(not far from Olympic Park area)
If someone had told me that they were thinking of developing the area behind Silverwater Jail into a park, bike track and cafe I would have thought they were nuts. As it turns out, I was the one that was short sighted. This area has grown hugely in popularity, to the point where I wouldn’t try to go there on a special occasion like Mother’s Day because it is so busy now. The council have done an amazing job of utilising this land and have put in a park that is really different and innovative. You may look at the photos and wonder why I’ve included it because it does not have a Liberty swing or something specific to a child in a wheelchair.
It is however, impossible to cover all the different levels of ability/disability and also the reasons people may go to a park. When our son was younger we would have taken him to this park and managed to do many of the things here. We would have zipped his wheelchair in and out of the water spouts shown below. Now that he is too big to do this we usually do a walk along the waterfront with AJ riding her bike or scooter. We usually grab something either take away or have something to eat in the cafe.
The Armory Cafe has delicious food and is very popular for breakfast as well as lunch. Make a reservation because even on a weekday this place gets booked out. They have a good stand alone disabled toilet at the cafe and there are also disabled public toilets in the picnic area here.
AJ’s Tip
This is an awesome park. We had lots of fun. It gets very busy so get there early in the morning so it’s not crowded on the play equipment.
