The Sands Torquay was the first hotel stay for us on our Great Ocean Road drive. After the hustle and bustle of flying from Sydney to Melbourne, we were pleased to drive just over 80 minutes to get to The Sands from Melbourne Airport.
As a family of four adults we needed two rooms, including an accessible room which features in this review.
The Sands Torquay review
Torquay is known as Australia’s surf capital and it’s the starting point of the Great Ocean Road. With its stunning beaches and laid-back coastal vibe, it’s the perfect place to relax before continuing further along on the Great Ocean Road. The Sands Torquay‘s fresh decor reflects the beachside location with artworks featuring local landscapes and the room decorated in pastel blue accents.
The spacious bedroom offers room on either side of the bed for transferring and the king-size bed can be split to convert to twin beds if needed.
Bedroom facts – entry door 88cm, bed height 58cm and clearance under the bed 12cm.
A bathroom adjoins the bedroom and offers features including a shower bench seat, height adjustable shower and lever taps. Feedback was provided to the hotel about the toiletries being out of reach once seated on the bench seat so I hope that will be changed to provide easier access.
Grab rails surround the toilet and there is a lovely long bench beside the accessible wash basin meaning there is plenty of room for a toiletries bag. Towel rails and other features are all located in a lower position.

Although the balcony overlooks a car park, it was nice to find a ramp to provide access.
A sleek and modern premium 18-hole links-style championship golf course is the jewel in The Sands Torquay‘s crown and although I couldn’t putt a ball into a hole to save my life, the expansive green space surrounded by native bushland was pleasing to the eye.
We found it handy to be able to dine onsite and enjoyed breakfast and dinner in the restaurant overlooking the golf course.
As I’ve said many times, breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and this hearty breakfast had me struggling to fit in anything at our first stop at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. I took one for the team though and did my best to fit in some chocolate for the purposes of sharing the experience with you. I’m stoic like that.
If you are staying at The Sands Torquay and would like to get onto the beautiful beach, make sure you book either a beach walker or beach wheelchair to use at Fishermans Beach.
We were thrilled to see the equipment available to access the beach including, beach to assist with getting down to the water’s edge.
